TFT Enchanted Wilds How to Play Coven
High-risk Essence, then a cashout that has to land before 10 HP.
Coven is the Enchanted Wilds origin that pays you for killing units and for losing player combats. That combination is why the trait looks free on stream and feels awful in your own 8th. You are supposed to lose narrow fights while still collecting kills, then cash Essence before your Health runs out. Greeding 7 Coven at 8 HP is not a plan.
Pair this page with the comp tier list for Defender Cassiopeia, and with ranked climb for Health math. Numbers below are patch 18.1. Patch 18.2 is scheduled for September 10 and is not live yet.
Who is Coven
Camille, Caitlyn, Elise, Cassiopeia, Morgana, and Avatar Lux. That is the whole origin. You splash 3, you cash out around 4–5, and you only go 7 when the board is already winning.
| Cost | Champion | Job |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Camille | Ravager opener |
| 2 | Caitlyn | Hunter opener |
| 2 | Elise | Vanguard front |
| 3 | Cassiopeia | Spellweaver carry, the roll-7 core |
| 4 | Morgana | Invoker 4-cost |
| 5 | Lux | Avatar +2 if the Origin is Coven |
Cassiopeia is still the Coven carry. She is not free LP after August 31: her ability went 440/660/1050 → 400/600/950 because Riot called Defender Cassio “one of the most consistent comps.” She wants time on the board, tank items, and AP. Morgana’s mana went 0/60 → 0/65, so cashout greed is worse. Morgana is a Fast 8 splash, not a reason to force 7 Coven from Stage 2.
Essence and cashout
Coven gathers Essence when enemy champions die and grants extra Essence when you lose player combat. In patch 18.1, cashout decisions start once you reach 40 Essence. Rewards scale as you bank more. The client tooltip is the live contract; this page is the decision layer.
The correct Coven loss:
- You still kill several enemy units (kill Essence).
- You lose the round by a small margin (loss Essence).
- You keep enough Tactician Health to convert the next cashout into wins.
The incorrect Coven loss: a wipe at Stage 3 with a 1-star frontline because you were “farming Essence.” That is just dying.
If you are already under 20 HP, Combat Wisps from how Wisps work beat another greedy loss. Coven is not a substitute for slamming items from the item recipes.
Two ways to play it
Defender Cassiopeia (roll 7). Still the Coven carry, now A-tier / cooling — play it when copies are open, not because week-one overlays said S. Hit a 3-cost Cass pair, slam Blue Buff or Shojin plus AP, roll at 7 for 3-star Cass plus Defender tanks. Flora Fatalis (Fiddlesticks / Soraka) or Spellweaver splashes show up in winning versions. You cash Essence when it actually upgrades the board, not when the next Prismatic icon looks pretty.
Coven splash 3. Play three Coven units because you hit Camille and Elise, take the first honest cashout, then pivot into Blossom or Fast 8 strongest board. This is how most players should use the trait. You do not need Morgana 2-star to justify the origin.
Lux as Coven Avatar counts twice. Buy her when she completes 5, not because the laser is purple. Live Final Spark notes sit on legendaries.
Scouting and positioning
Scout other Coven players the same way you scout Ahri. Two Cassiopeia players means you are not the Cass player. Watch Health: a Coven opponent sitting at 15 HP with a stacked Essence bar is about to spike or about to die. Position Cass off the Blackthorn hex if you also splash that origin. Do not park your carry on a sacrifice tile because a screenshot did.
Carousel: take the open Cass or the tank component. Taking a rod “for Morgana later” while Cass is naked is how Coven 8ths.
Common Coven mistakes
Holding four unique Coven 4-costs instead of 2-starring Cass. Forcing 7 because the trait art is a cashout. Skipping Combat Wisps to “keep losing.” Itemizing Caitlyn as the carry when Cass is the plan. Playing Coven into a lobby that already has two Essence farmers.
If Cass copies are gone, leave. Riftbeast and Sprykin Veigar on the comp list exist so you have somewhere else to go. Coven is a tempo and Health puzzle, not a vertical you paint by numbers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for Enchanted Wilds players.
When should I cash out Coven Essence?
When the reward actually upgrades the next fight and you still have Health to spend it. Patch 18.1 cashouts start at 40 Essence — confirm the tooltip.
Is 7 Coven required?
No. Most boards should splash 3 or play Cass at 4–5. 7 is a win-more when you are already stable.
Should I lose on purpose every round?
Only narrow losses that still get kills. Wipeouts just send you to eighth. See ranked climb.
Who is the Coven carry?
Cassiopeia at roll 7. Morgana and Caitlyn are support or openers unless a dedicated line says otherwise.
